I try to associate the person with someone I know from childhood with that name. It usually works for the first recall!

That’s a great idea Carolyn. Thanks. I’m not familiar with that technique, but it makes a lot of sense.
You are officially associated with one my best childhood friends. If I call you Carrie sometimes, you’ll know why.

Haha! I’ll be sure to let it slide. :)

When I’m in a group meeting around a table I have a little routine: I look at the person as they introduce themselves/or are introduced; I say their name right (e.g. “glad to meet you, Dave”); and I write their first name on the top of my tablet and in the position they are sitting from my vantage. Works like a charm. For standing events, I like getting cards too and usually jot something on the reverse.

Brilliant Valerie! Thanks for sharing this.

You reminded me of a job I had once, where I was surrounded by other people. I did something similar with a pad of paper. I mapped out the desks and wrote the names of each person as I learned them. It was like a new guy cheat sheet.

I try to repeat the name. It not only helps me, but there is something about hearing your own name that we react to. Listeners seem to react better and it ads a personal touch that sticks with them.
